Mihai Eminescu was a Romanian Romantic poet and philosopher (1850-1889), the first translator of Kant into Romanian and a great admirer of Schopenhauer and oriental philosophy. He studied at the universities of Vienna and Berlin. In his short life, in addition to other contributions, he produced a poetic work for which he is still today considered the greatest poet of Romanian literature ‒ comparable in depth and refinement to any of the great European poets, classical or modern. The poem translated here is a philosophical poem, the first of a series of so-called Letters (I, II and III) ‒ a poem in which he expresses his own Weltanschauung (cosmogony and philosophy of life).
